The significant of this news is HUGE!, I’ve been running VLC player on my Macs and PC’s for after getting tired of worrying about Codecs.

You see VLC player allows you to watch movies that have been compressed so that they are easier backed up on to external hard-drives or take up less space on your computer

What this finally means is all those movies or videos you’ve had on your PC or Mac should* now work on the iPad by simply adding them via iTunes.

After 2 weeks of review, VLC for the iPad is eventually available on the AppStore! The release date is set to Tuesday, Sept. 21, so depending on your timezone, it should be available pretty soon. For instance, it’s already available in New-Zealand! Just follow this iTunes link that should become active as soon as the app reaches your store.

If you were using the tripwire script, you already know this: iOS 4.1 is now available for download via iTunes. Just connect your iPhone or iPod touch and hit the Check for Update button.

As announced last week, the new version of the firmware should fix some deeply annoying issues (if you’ve inadvertently muted or hung up a call with your earlobe, raise your hand). It also adds Game Center, HDR photos, high-def video uploading, TV show rentals and dramatic improvements to the lot of iPhone 3G owners.

So there you have it everyone. Go ahead and have at iOS 4.1 if you are on an iPhone or iPod Touch. However, I know I have said this plenty of times, but I cannot stress this enough. All of you with jailbroken iOS devices, please stay away from iOS 4.1 until further notice. I am sure that the iPhone dev team is working on their jailbreak tools.

The A.P. is reporting the story of a Dallas man who went out of town to visit relatives 1400 miles away in Hartford, Conn. While he was there he got an alert from his iCam app running on his iPhone that motion had been detected in the house — which turned out to be two intruders trying to get in, and eventually throwing a brick through a glass door to gain access.

He called 911 and the next motion alert he received was the arrival of police officers with guns drawn. It isn’t clear from the story if the burglars got away with any loot, but certainly iCam did work and relayed the message to the owner of the house.

We’ve reviewed iCam before. I use it to keep an eye on the house and pets when I’m away, and for the cost of US $4.99 plus a couple of webcams it really is a great low-cost security system. The software can be set to take a rapid series of still photos when motion is detected, so the police should get some shots of the burglars to help make a case when and if they nab them.

Now we can clearly see just how useful it is to have an iPhone. Which leads me on to my tip for today. If you want to take extra care of your home, set up a surveillance system and link it to iCam on your iPhone.

The owner and co developer of the Faceplant App which makes connecting to other Facetime users extremely simple confirmed that they are expecting the iPhone 4 FacePlant App to be released today.

Other of their current successes include http://www.12seconds.tv which is according to them: “the best place online for video status updates.”

Althought the iPad doesn’t have a camera built in, there are rumours that Skype will be including FaceTime protocol which will at least allow you a one way Video call.

As soon as we get our hands on it I’m sure we’ll have a go at it as well.

iPhone Tethering App

“How a 15-yo Kid Tricked Apple With a Disguised iPhone Tethering AppOh, Nick Lee, you clever boy. You see, Nick here tricked Apple with a very simple iPhone application: Handy Light. On the surface it looked like any other $0.99 flashlight application. But, secretly, it was a lot more useful.

It turns out that the story of the Trojan horse still works today since a 15-yo Kid named Nick Lee created a innocent looking iphone app and Tricked Apple since it was able to provide the much loved iPhone Tethering.

Previously this was possibly by creating special Congfiguration prfiles using the Official settings of the iPhone Configuration Utility.

For the brief time that Handy Light was available however it was much simpler to allow internet usage on your computer by simply connecting your iPhone via USB cable and using the internet through your phone.

On the surface, Handy Light just allowed you to make your iPhone’s screen go blank with a color of your choice. You opened it, clicked a swatch from a simple palette, and that was it: Life in technicolor. Another stupid flashlight application, like a hundred others. Or so the people who test applications at Apple’s App Store thought.

Inside, the app was a full tethering application, a program that allows you to use your iPhone as a 3G modem, so you can surf the web from your computer connected to the iPhone. All without having to pay the additional $20 per month that AT&T stupidly wants you to pay for that kind of service. That $20 on top of the data plan you already pay for the iPhone.

I really hope that it is the MOBILE industry and NOT Apple that is creating these barriers as it really makes no sense. We are already paying extremely high prices for data rates compared to even developing countries like Brazil and South Africa

I agree with Gizmodo, and wish the programmers all the luck to go and create apps with hidden features, Trojan doors and all the fun things we WANT, but can’t necessarily HAVE due to silly policies made by GREED.

well you might remember the top reasons why you might want to jailbreak your iPhone so member that this will only ne possible soon IF you DONT upgrade your iPhone firmware tomorrow when Apple releases the ios 4.1 update.

Depending on the fixes or changes that ios 4.1 provide , I’m still sure jail breaking will be more beneficial than the update (biassed of course). So just remember you were warned.

And now that we have both the next version of Spirit like all iOS device userland jailbreak, and unlock for iPhone 4 ready, the wait is now probably for Apple to push the next firmware update i.e. iOS 4.0.1 / 4.1 for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and 3G before these jailbreak and unlock tools are made available for public consumption. Eagerly awaiting the iPhone 4 spirit jailbreak app

The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple is not planning on issuing an iPhone 4 recall at today’s press conference.

Apple’s iPhone 4 has been dogged by reports of antenna-reception problems since its launch last month. The company has called a news conference to discuss the issue Friday. Apple doesn’t plan to recall the phone, a person familar with the matter said.

Apple engineers were apparently aware of the risks associated with the external antenna design but “Mr. Jobs liked the design so much that Apple went ahead with its development”. Earlier today, a Bloomberg article similarly claimed an Apple engineer expressed concern about the design.

The iPhone 4 signal issue has exploded in the media in recent days even with New York senator Charles Schumer publishing an open letter to Steve Jobs expressing concerns about the issue. Schumer is known for his efforts in consumer protection.

Apple is holding a press conference today to address the issue.

I personally think that apple have taken the right choice to not do a recall as it could have costed them approximately 1.5 billion US dollars. In addition to this, It could have tarnished their reputation for high quality products.

I’ve been looking for a nice iPhone 4 Case for quite some time to combat the “left handed death grip” – Yes I know im over dramatic as its actually not really a problem, but a cool case does make a difference.
