March was when my son celebrated his 15th birthday, and I got him an iPhone.

Well, it has come and gone. Apple’s september media event has finished. For those of you who were watching the whole live feed right here, you would have seen some awesome hardware and software as well.

- Apple retail update: Showing off new stores in Paris, Shanghai, Covent Garden (London). Now 300 stores in ten countries with Spain coming soon. Some days see over 1 million visitors to retail stores. 80,000 One to One classes per week. Over half of Mac purchasers in retail stores are new to Mac.- iOS update: Have now shipped 120 million iOS devices. Activating 230,000 new iOS devices per day. We think some of our friends are counting upgrades in their numbers, but we think strictly new activations is a better metric. Over 6.5 billion app downloads, 200 per second. 250,000 apps in App Store – 25,000 for iPad.

- Apple TV: Never been a huge hit, but no one has made a hit in this sector. Users love the Apple TV though, so what have we learned?
- Users want Hollywood movies and TV shows whenever they want them, everything in HD, lower prices, no computer on the TV. Don’t want to manage storage or deal with syncing. Want hardware to be silent, cool, and small.
- New Apple TV…one-fourth the size of the previous model. Back has power cord, one HDMI connector, optical audio out, and Ethernet. Wi-Fi 802.11n built-in.
- Movies, TV show, and music, all HD when available. All rentals, no purchases, so no storage management. Can stream from computers, no syncing required. Photo slideshows.
- Can rent first-run HD movies for $4.99. Prices drop over time. HD TV show rentals at $0.99…commercial-free. Big step for the studios, so ABC and Fox at first. Rest of them will see the light and follow along.
- Netflix streaming included for subscribers. YouTube integration, including HD content, photos from Flickr, video and photos from MobileMe, stream from Mac or PC.
- Apple TV interface similar to existing, but simplified somewhat.

Please excuse me for this being a long blog post. Anyway, it seems that apple have warmed to the idea of live streaming their events. Who knows, possibly we will see apple doing this more often in the future. So in brief, iOS 4.1 is coming out september 8th. If you are jailbroken then stay away from it until further notice. Otherwise, you can go ahead and have at it on your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. iOS 4.2 is coming out sometime in november and it is free for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.
iTunes 10 is available today as well, but at the time of writing this apple has not made it available for download yet.
Of course, there is a new iPod Touch on the way, which will come pre-loaded with iOS 4.1 so no jailbreak for that until further notice. With that aside, that is one crazily thin iPod Touch and it has an A4 processor and a retina display which makes it an iPhone 4 without the phone part. On top of that, you have the iPod shuffle which has not changed at all, and the iPod nano which has a multi-touch interface like the iOS devices. And these devices will be out on the same day as iOS 4.1.

For years, people have been gaming using either a games console or a decent PC. Of course as of very recently, Mac gamers have been getting in on the action as gaming company Valve recently added Mac support for their Steam gaming platform. Even those on the iPhone, iPod Touch and the iPad have been getting in on the action. However, some of the hardware is not capable of playing a game. Those with hardware that is just about capable of playing a game will experience very slow performance.
Very soon, a new service called OnLive will fix this. Put simply, OnLive is a service that will stream games to a TV, a PC, a Mac computer, an iPhone, an iPod Touch or an iPad. If you are on a TV, then you would need to buy a special microconsole that plugs into the back of your TV. If you have a controller that will connect via USB, then this will work as will. If you are on any of the devices mentioned above, you would have to download the Onlive client and connect using your broadband connection.
Once you are connected you can then choose the game that you wish to play. If you have anyone in your friends list, then you can also play against them. Now this is where things get interesting. The OnLive servers will then stream the video to your iOS device. You will not need to worry about where you are going to get all the high-end hardware to run those awesome games from. OnLive’s hardware will take care of all that, so that all you need to worry about is actually playing the game.
This means that the iOS devices, PCs and Mac computers will be able to play games using onlive that are way beyond the capabilities of the hardware in them. Put simply, this means you will be able to play games like Assasin’s creed, DIRT 2 and many others on your iOS device , and it will still look awesome. However, you will need a broadband internet connection speed of at least 5mbps in order to use Onlive.
At the moment, the people at OnLive have not given any details on when the service will be ready for the public. However, a lucky handful in the USA who have signed up early, they will get their first year free and an optional 2nd year at $4.95 US.
Unfortunately, there are no details on pricing of onlive yet for any other countries. So we will have to wait until they do announce something like that. For more information on this interesting gaming service, visit www.onlive.com.

Purelygadgets have confirmed to us that they have stocks of the three versions of the iPad currently on sale in the US. Prices range from £700 for the 16GB version to £870 for the 64GB version with the 32GB version for £786 including free next day delivery.
Simply Electronics are also stocking all three versions of the iPad for £540, £630 and £740 respectively with free delivery, prices that are more reasonable compared to Purelygadgets.
Apple has yet to confirm exactly when the iPad will be available in the UK although rumours point to the 24th of April, the only available “normal” weekend before the bank
I will definitely just wait another few weeks until the UK launch as I hope the prices will be closer to the current USA prices, although for some reason IT equipment in the United Kingsom is almost always at least 25% more expensive than in the US
Nonetheless, if one of you do decide to pre-purchase feel free to arange a meetup and let me get my hands on it

Citrix Systems claims that it can help users run a virtual installation of Windows 7 on the Apple iPad, when the tablet device is released later this year.
Writing in a blog post on the company’s site, Chris Fleck, the company’s vice president of Community and Solutions Development, said those companies that use either of the company’s desktop virtualization platforms, XenDesktop or XenApp, will be able to use Windows 7 from the iPad.
“It turns out [that] the 9.7-inch display on the iPad, with a 1024×768[-pixel] screen resolution, works great for a full [virtual desktop infrastructure] XenDesktop,” Fleck wrote on the Citrix blog.
Fleck went on to say that any Windows application will “run unmodified and securely in the data center.” It will even allow for users to use multiple applications at once–a major sticking point with Apple’s iPad software.
You can run Windows remotely on your iPad once it comes out…

At Apple’s media event introducing the iPad (see Hands-on Impressions of the iPad, 29 January 2010), Glenn Fleishman and I wanted to know what the experience of creating a Keynote presentation would be like. Inspired by a blog post from Fraser Speirs (“iPad Fallacy #1: ‘It’s not for content creation’“), I created a short video of Glenn manipulating objects (resizing, repositioning, rotating) and activating the annotation controls (including a laser pointer) in Keynote’s presentation mode. Strange, I won’t have these issues with the iPad…
10 minutes after I have my iPad it will have:
1) Ability to Make phone calls… and VOIP (Skype to landlines, Fring etc) calling over 3g (SDK changed released 2days ago) – Yes it has a microphone
2) Flash support (via my Bookmarklet…and Flash Gordon) coming soon… not sure if I should release this as Flash licks … … seriously, get over it, Flash sucks, resource hog,overused where 3 lines of CSS3 could be used, and the cause of many desktop browser crashes.
3) Have access* to all the power of an OSX, Windows 7 or Linux PC (as a dumb terminal via Citrix or VNC) which could be useful for doing remote support from.
4) Multi-tasking – Actually all iPhones, iPods and iPad’s have this functionality built in (thats how you are able to listen to your tunes, while checking your email or playing a game.. using some programs you can enable this for all your apps. Under Cydia you can install ProSwitcher which gives you beautiful
5) Send SMS messages – albeit via myo2.co.uk -
6) Full Video out via VideoOutTuner
Perfect for the mobile Classroom, simply Brilliant
There are a few things which I would like to see in v2 of the iPad
1) Turn-able Camera attachment via USB so that:
a) my Augmented reality apps can work on it while the camera is facing away from me.
b) I can Skype Video chat/ Video to Twitter or Blog from the device (Video chat or create Podcasts on the go)
or
2) Bluetooth or USB connection to iPhone’s video Camera…
Only time will tell, but don’t underestimate this baby. It is already ruffled a lot of feathers
