Calling all jailbroken iOS device owners: new version of cydia is out now

GameStop, Inc.So if you have been using a jailbroken iOS device, then you will know that Cydia is the place where you can get tweaks and apps which you would not find on Apple’s app store.  You will also know that before, cydia used to be slow as well. However, I can assure you that these days are over.   A new version of cydia has been released and I you can click here to find out how to download and install the new Cydia onto your iOS device.

I have installed the new Cydia on my iOS device and I can say that the new cydia is definitely faster and I highly recommend downloading it now.  Don’t just take my word for it though, go ahead and see for yourself by downloading the new Cydia here.   However, you will need to be prepared to spend some money on safari download manager.

In other jailbreak news,  the iPhone Dev Team have released a new version of redsn0w for devices running iOS 4.2.1.  However, this jailbreak is tethered.  This means that every time you want to reboot your iOS device, you will have to plug it into your computer and run it through redsn0w to get yourself back to normal.  Untethered means that you would not have to do this and when you do the jailbreak you are done, and you would not need to run your iOS device through redsn0w unless you have restored or upgraded your phone using a stock firmware.  Therefore, I strongly suggest staying away from it until further notice.

If you are still on 4.1 or 3.2.2 on your iOS device and you are jailbroken, please stay away from 4.2.1 until further notice, but by all means, do download the new Cydia.

Update, as of 27th November 2010: The iPhone dev team released their ultrasn0w unlock for iOS 4.2.1. At the moment, it will work on the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3GS. Support for the iPhone 4 will be added soon.

However, iPhone tutorial videos cannot be held responsible if you brick your iPhone doing this unlock.

iOS 4.2 for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad is now ready for download

As promised by Apple, iOS 4.2 is now available. Head on over to iTunes and download the latest and greatest iOS firmware to date. iOS 4.2 brings a huge number of improvements to the iPhone and iPod family and finally brings the iPad into the 4.x fold. It’s a terrific update, and one, we think, that’s been worth the wait.

In addition to this, all iPhone 4, 4th generation iPod Touch users and iPad users will be able to take advantage of the free find my iPhone feature which would allow you to find your iPhone if you unfortunate enough to forget it somewhere or have it stolen.
All you jailbreakers and unlockers will have to wait until the dev teams come out with their jailbreaks and software unlock for 4.2.
Apart from that, be sure to connect your iOS device to iTunes on your computer and update.  Then be sure to let us know what you think of it.

iTunes 10.1 is ready for downloading, iOS 4.2 delayed

iTunes 10.1 live now, introduces AirPlay and iOS 4.2

iTunes 10.1 is now available in a Software Update near you — the latest version of Apple’s all-in-one music library/iOS sync/movie rental/social network/educational material application (why’s it still just called iTunes again?) introduces AirPlay compatibility (as promised), lines up the iOS 4.2 release with all kinds of goodies for iPhone and iPad owners, and includes that special sauce that seems to come with all big Apple releases: “stability and performance improvements.”

But don’t take our word for it — hit up your Software Update right now and find the new version for yourself. If you spot something in there that we didn’t know about, be sure to let us know about it, too.

So there you have it folks, iTunes 10.1 is now ready for you to download on Windows, or Mac OSX.   Those of you with a jailbroken iOS device will have to wait until I have given you the all clear to upgrade.  In addition to this, a good source of mine has told me that the release of iOS 4.2 has been delayed for one week at least.

Update as at 13/11/2011: Upon further investigation: I can confirm that iTunes 10.1 is safe for all users of jailbroken iOS devices

iOS 4.2 could be released on friday

MacStories.net is reporting that one of their sources working close with AT&T revealed that Apple will release iOS 4.2 on Friday at 10AM PST for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. MacStories is also reporting that tomorrow will see the release of iTunes 10.1 and Mac OS X 10.6.5 via Software Update. Both iTunes 10.1 and Mac OS X 10.6.5 are presumed to be required for the iOS 4.2 update for its AirPlay and AirPrint functionality.

Last week the Gold Master of iOS 4.2 was released to developers and just last night a new version of Mac OS X 10.6.5 was seeded to devs. Apple had previously stated that iOS 4.2 would be released sometime this month.

Keep in mind that apple normally do their iOS 4.1 releases at around 10AM or 11AM California time. So if you are one of those people who like getting your hands on a new version of iOS as soon as it comes out, then I suggest you wait a little while. This is because it’s in the first 24 hours of a new version of iOS when there will be a lot of people trying to download the update at once. This will cause you to experience a slow download speed.

iOS 4.2 has gone gold

GameStop, Inc.Just recently, Apple released the Golden Master version of iOS 4.2  and of course the iOS 4.2 SDK to all iOS developers.

The golden master version of any software is basically as close as it can be to being ready for release.  The golden master is sometimes the version of any software that ends up being the version which is released to the end user.

There have been some recent changes to iOS4.2 for iPad and iPhone.  One such change is that the multitasking bar now has the ability to control the brightness of the screen.  If you are a developer and you have the iOS 4.2 GM, please feel free to leave a comment and tell us what you think of it.

All jailbroken iOS device users are advised  upgrade to iOS 4.2 until the iPhone Dev Team or the Chronic Dev Team release their jailbreaking tools.

Developers Debate iOS 4.1 Proximity Sensor Fix – PCWorld Business Center

When iOS 4.1 is released by Apple next week, it will have a number of new bells and whistles enhancing the iPhone and iPod Touch experience. Whether or not the highly-anticipated update will finally fix the proximity sensor issue plaguing iPhone 4 users, though, is still uncertain.

When Steve Jobs presented iOS 4.1 he focused on the new features being introduced. Applying the iOS update will add the new iTunes Ping feature, the ability to rent TV shows via iTunes, HD video uploads via W-Fi, HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography, and the Xbox Live-like Game Center for social gaming. Jobs also mentioned in passing that iOS 4.1 will fix nagging issues with Bluetooth, 3G performance, and the notorious proximity sensor issue.

Cries of “hallelujah” (or maybe “finally”, or “it’s about time”) arose from iPhone 4 users haunted by putting calls on speakerphone, or hanging up on customers or co-workers with their cheek thanks to the flaky proximity sensor failing to disable the touchscreen display while engaged in a call. Some developers, however, suggest it may be premature to celebrate just yet.

One developer who has had an opportunity to work with and test the beta releases and the Gold Master (GM)–the official release–of iOS 4.1 has identified that the proximity sensor still has issues. Ryan Thomas Bell has even taken the time to compile and post YouTube videos demonstrating the continuing problem with the proximity sensor.

Bell, who goes by the alias “mistabell” on the Apple Forums, posted “I hate to be the naysayer (i love you apple!) but I don’t think the GM that went out today with the announcement fixes the problem all the way. At least not for everyone under every condition. (I played with it for about an hour today.) My last posts got deleted because I mentioned a pre-release, so I won’t post the technical reasoning. I’m going to move my discussion over to the private developer forums. Good luck, guys.”

Another post on the Apple Forums from dbk9999 says “it isn’t just about the sensor activating at a certain distance, but it changes according to how you use it. It has to be software making these “decisions”. So it could be possible that software could fix it. It could be that a hardware problem is too much for the software to compensate for.”

This may be a case like the iPhone 4 antenna “death grip” issue that is possible to mitigate or minimize, but not entirely fix via software. Perhaps the rumors that Apple is developing a re-engineered iPhone 4 with a hardware fix for the antenna problem will also include a hardware engineering solution to fully resolve the proximity sensor issue.

Of course, for all of you with Jailbroken iOS devices, you know the drill. Don’t upgrade to 4.1 until the iPhone Dev Team releases their tools that will jailbreak iOS 4.1. Utilitarian Dual SIM iPhone 4 Case

This quirky-looking iPhone 4 case by USB Fever has one unique feature most other cases lack: a dual SIM card slot. For $30 you get a case, room for an additional SIM card, and a dual-SIM adapter. Once you have your piggy-backed SIM card attached, you can toggle between the two cards using the iPhone’s settings menu. Unfortunately you can’t use both SIM cards simultaneously, and when you switch from one SIM card to the other, it takes a few minutes for your iPhone to search for a signal. During this time you may get a “No SIM Card Installed” warning, but this will disappear after a minute or two. Not a deal-breaker compared to needing two phones on a long trip.

This case isn’t the most attractive case out there (by far), but what it lacks in looks it makes up for in utility. The hassle of using more than one phone while traveling makes this case one to consider if you think you’ll be traveling internationally. Another bonus: no iPhone death grip problems, but all cases can of course make that claim.

Don’t get me wrong, it looks very useful especially if you don’t want to take 2 phones with you. However, the problem I see straight away with this case is that the integrated dual-SIM card adapter could cause the phone to get scratched.

So for those of you who have an iPhone 4 which is not on O2, you can go ahead and use JailbreakMe over at www.jailbreakme.com and run ultrasn0w on your iPhone 4. However, be aware that once you unlock, you must not update your iOS again as once you have updated your iOS then you will lose the ability to use ultrasn0w. Other than that, go ahead and have at your Ultrasn0w- unlocked iPhone 4.

the way that you find out what baseband you have is by going to settings on your homescreen, tapping general and then tapping about. Then, scroll down until you find your modem firmware version.

iPhone 4 available for free on Orange – News – Know Your Mobile

Following Orange’s tariff shake-up, customers can now grab an iPhone 4 for free on a 24 month plan

As we reported yesterday, Orange has adjusted its iPhone 4 tariffs to include extras such as picture messaging and Satnav but the network has also amended its pricing, which now sees a £50 a month spend qualify for a free Apple iPhone 4 16GB.

Sure, it may cost you a minimum of £1200 over the course of the 24 month contract but that isn’t important.

What matters is that you’ll be able to walk away with the highly regarded (yet somewhat maligned) Apple superphone for the grand total of nil! Not to mention 1200 minutes, unlimited text messages and 500mb of mobile data.

So, if you’re a user who regularly spends over £50 a month on your mobile bill and you fancy dipping your toe into the proprietary but beautiful world of iPhone ownership you should give Orange a look!

The iPhone Killed The Open Web

The latest Big Idea from Wired editor man Chris “Atoms Are the New Bits and Tails Are Long” Anderson: “The web is dead.” Why? Apps, Facebook, iPhones.

Chris Anderson’s new Big Idea – that the open web is giving way to a mere transport system for closed or semi-closed platforms like Facebook or iPhone apps from the App Store – is not very new. In its current iPhone-y, app-y incarnation, it’s at least a couple of years old. Wired even participates in the very phenomenon it bemoans, with its very fancy iPad app. (Because it has to: “The assumption had been that once the market matured, big companies would be able to reverse the hollowing-out trend of analogue dollars turning into digital pennies. Sadly that hasn’t been the case for most on the web, and by the looks of it there’s no light at the end of that tunnel.”) And the general idea itself goes back even further – Wired proclaimed the browser was dead in 1997, as he points out.

It’s true that the open, free-for-all web is besieged, but in a lot of ways Anderson doesn’t mention, like the potential neutering of net neutrality principles or the ongoing bandwidth crimp that could hamper innovative-but-data-intensive services – which, in turn, will push users toward the kind of boxed services (cable VOD or ISP preferred content) that has Anderson so nerve-wracked. Like Comcast giving preferred access to NBC’s content by not counting it toward your monthly data allowance (since Comcast owns half of NBC now) or Verizon speeding up YouTube over Vimeo.

There are reasons to be nervous about the future of the web, but I’m not sure the NPR app is one of them. Oh, while we’re talking about apps, Chris, since I subscribe to the dead-tree edition of Wired, why can’t I see the videos from the iPad app without paying full price, twice? [Wired]

Onlive gaming on iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad

GameStop, Inc.For years, people have been gaming using either a games console or a decent PC.  Of course as of very recently, Mac gamers have been getting in on the action as gaming company Valve recently added Mac support for their Steam gaming platform.  Even those on the iPhone, iPod Touch and the iPad have been getting in on the action.  However, some of the hardware is not capable of playing a game.  Those with hardware that is just about capable of playing a game will experience very slow performance.

Very soon, a new service called OnLive will fix this.  Put simply, OnLive  is a service that will stream games to a TV, a PC, a Mac computer, an iPhone, an iPod Touch or an iPad.  If you are on a TV, then you would need to buy a special microconsole that plugs into the back of your TV.  If you have a controller that will connect via USB, then this will work as will.  If you are on any of the devices mentioned above, you would have to download the Onlive client and connect using your broadband connection.

Once you are connected you can then choose the game that you wish to play.  If you have anyone in your friends list, then you can also play against them.  Now this is where things get interesting.  The OnLive servers will then stream the video to your iOS device.  You will not need to worry about where you are going to get all the high-end hardware to run those awesome games from.  OnLive’s hardware will take care of all that, so that all you need to worry about is actually playing the game.

This means that the iOS devices, PCs and Mac computers will be able to play games using onlive that are way beyond the capabilities of the hardware in them. Put simply, this means you will be able to play games like Assasin’s creed, DIRT 2 and many others on your iOS device , and it will still look awesome.  However, you will need a broadband internet connection speed of at least 5mbps in order to use Onlive.

At the moment, the people at OnLive have not given any details on when the service will be ready for the public.  However, a lucky handful in the USA who have signed up early, they will get their first year free and an optional 2nd year at $4.95 US.

Unfortunately, there are no details on pricing of onlive yet for any other countries. So we will have to wait until they do announce something like that.  For more information on this interesting gaming service, visit www.onlive.com.

AT&T Customers want an iPhone on Verizon

Market research firm Morpace polled iPhone users (on AT&T) to see how many of them would consider switching to a Verizon iPhone if given the opportunity, and how many were waiting for such a change to take place. Of those surveyed 34 percent would make the switch from AT&T to Verizon if the phone became available, while 47 percent said they would give it some thought.

Of 1,000 users surveyed, it was also found that 29 percent of consumers across all carriers said they would likely buy an iPhone from Verizon. 51 percent were already Verizon customers, meaning that quite a few Verizon customers are in fact waiting for the iPhone to land on their network.

As TechCrunch points out, this would definitely hurt Android sales, because the Android OS is currently the top choice for smartphone users on Verizon.

If the iPhone were to become available across more carriers, there is no telling how it would impact Android sales.

For those who don’t know, AT&T and Verizon are both mobile phone networks in the USA. So it seems that AT&T customers want to have an iPhone on the Verizon network. Apple however need to know that they cannot keep ignoring the requests of their customers. However, from what I know the iPhone may actually launch on verizon as soon as January 2011.

This is because a source of mine very close to Apple has told me that apple has ordered millions of CDMA chipsets from the company qualcomm. CDMA for those who don’t know it is the technology that Verizon uses on their network.

I should also say at this point, for those of you waiting for iOS4 on the iPad, Apple is going to be releasing it somewhere around Autumn of 2010(or this fall). I also know that the iPad will also have full iOS4 support. This means that all the 100+ features of iOS4 will work on the iPad with no problems.

My3G allows FaceTime Calls over 3G

Hot on the heels of this weekend’s release of the JailbreakMe Web-based jailbreak tool for iOS devices, users with jailbroken iPhone 4s can now think about installing My3G from Intelliborn, which was just updated to enable FaceTime video calling over 3G connections.

My3G essentially tricks a user’s phone into thinking it is on Wi-Fi instead of 3G, allowing users to access a number of features and types of content typically restricted to Wi-Fi connections. My3G is typically available to jailbroken iPhones via Rock Your iPhone for $3.99, but the site is currently down due to the high traffic load.

9 to 5 Mac has posted a video briefly showing off FaceTime over 3G in action.

I should warn you that this may take a lot of bandwidth. If you are on a data plan with a strict limit, then I suggest limiting your facetime calls to 30 seconds maximum or not use this. iPhone 4 available now on Three in the UK

As we know the iPhone 4 is already available on T Mobile in the UK, but now we have even more good news for those of you interested in getting hold of one.

Thanks to a recent article by Matthew over at gadgetvenue.com I can confirm that the iPhone 4 is also available on Three, There are some really amazing deals available from Three you can choose from a 16GB iPhone 4 which will cost you just £99 and £30 per month.

With that deal you get included in the package 500 minutes across any network along with 5000 texts 5000 Three to Three minutes and also 1GB of internet which, which ever way you look at it is a far better deal than that which is being offered by T Mobile. If you are prepared to part with £45 per month you can get the iPhone 4 for free.

Another option is 32GB iPhone 4 on Three for £30 per month the phone is listed at £189 and for £45 per month you can get the phone for just £89. For further details on plans terms and the store click here all price plans are for 24 months.

So there you have it. All of the major mobile phone networks in the UK now offer the iPhone. This means that you now have a full choice of network providers to choose from when buying an iPhone. However, if you want to buy an iPhone now, then I suggest doing your research first. You should look at all the diferent pay-as-you-go and contracts offered by all the networks before choosing which one you want to go with.
