I had to use my US iTunes account to Download the Facebook Messenger App as it’s not available in the UK (*yet).

I wasn’t expecting too much from the Facebook Messenger App as I wasn’t all that impressed with the Facebook Chat feature on it’s Facebook App but I’m definitely hooked and happy.

The Secret of the App’s success lies in the “s” of “Add Friends(s)”

Firstly, What is nice is you can send a message to mobile phone numbers as well as normal Facebook messages.

You can also add a person or even a group of friends either via their Facebook account or their Mobile Phone number (if it is in your contacts on your phone)

Group chat participants can easily reply via text or via Facebook chat / messages, so your grandma or friend who is rebelling against technology can also be included.

One Strange thing we experienced though is participants didn’t receive Email notifications that they had a new message. . even if their notification settings were set to send them notifications.

This makes sense if you are already online and in a chat, but when you’re not a email (if you so choose) might be helpful to notify you of a new chat.

Apple releases iOS 4.3 beta 3 to developers

Run Android 2.3 on the iPhone 3G, iPhone 4 version coming soon

Nick Pack, an
iDroid developer, has just posted a video of an iPhone
3G running Android 2.3 Gingerbread (video embedded after the
break). It’s pretty sluggish, and the video quality is poor, but the
proof of concept is clear: it’s certainly Android 2.3 on an iPhone.

The same developer went
on to add that it’s still very early days for the port, and
that the “iPhone 4 port is under way and progressing steadily.” Of
course, once it runs on the iPhone 4, the Android 2.3 on the iPad is
just the tiniest of baby steps away.

While a public release of Android 2.3
for iPhone is probably a few weeks away, a stable build of Android
2.2 for iPhone is available from the iDroid site;
installation is pretty easy, and it runs quite well too.

so there you have it. A great way to get the best of both
worlds on an iPhone 3G. I have also left a video clip of this
above for you to have a look at. Though there may have been
performance issues with iOS 4 on the iPhone 3G, I am sure that when a
stable release of Android is ready, it should be usable. As
mentioned above, all of you iPhone 4 owners out there should also be
able to get in on the action soon as there will be a version of Android
for iPhone is in the works at the moment.

However, I should warn you that you will need to jailbreak
your iPhone if you want to try this out for yourselves.

Calling all jailbroken iOS device owners: new version of cydia is out now

So if you have been using a jailbroken iOS device, then you will know that Cydia is the place where you can get tweaks and apps which you would not find on Apple’s app store. You will also know that before, cydia used to be slow as well. However, I can assure you that these days are over. A new version of cydia has been released and I you can click here to find out how to download and install the new Cydia onto your iOS device.

I have installed the new Cydia on my iOS device and I can say that the new cydia is definitely faster and I highly recommend downloading it now. Don’t just take my word for it though, go ahead and see for yourself by downloading the new Cydia here. However, you will need to be prepared to spend some money on safari download manager.

In other jailbreak news, the iPhone Dev Team have released a new version of redsn0w for devices running iOS 4.2.1. However, this jailbreak is tethered. This means that every time you want to reboot your iOS device, you will have to plug it into your computer and run it through redsn0w to get yourself back to normal. Untethered means that you would not have to do this and when you do the jailbreak you are done, and you would not need to run your iOS device through redsn0w unless you have restored or upgraded your phone using a stock firmware. Therefore, I strongly suggest staying away from it until further notice.

If you are still on 4.1 or 3.2.2 on your iOS device and you are jailbroken, please stay away from 4.2.1 until further notice, but by all means, do download the new Cydia.

If you own an iPhone or an iPod Touch and have been waiting ages for a jailbreak, then the wait is nearing the end. A member of the Chronic Dev Team(an iPhone jailbreaking team) called P0sixninja has confirmed on his twitter that Greenpois0n will be released by this sunday 10th October 2010 at 10:10:10AM GMT

Greenpois0n has been built in such a way, that Apple could not patch it by using a software update. They would have to release new hardware to patch it up.

His actual tweet said the following:

“Things have progressed to the point where we don’t expect anymore roadblocks. ETA for greenpois0n is 10/10/10 at 10:10:10AM”

I will keep you all informed as to when this jailbreak is ready to download, so be sure to keep checking back. Remember, the date I have given is only an estimated one, meaning it could be released 1 day early. At the time of writing this, the Chronic Dev Team have been testing greenpois0n and making sure everything is perfect before releasing it.

Update as of 8th October 2010: The Chronic Dev Team has just confirmed that the greenpois0n jailbreak will be compatible with the 2nd generation Apple TV, the 4th Generation iPod Touch, the iPhone 4 and the iPad. In addition to this, greenpois0n will be an untethered jailbreak. This means that you will not have to connect your iOS device to your computer and run greenpois0n every time you want to reboot.

Adobe resumes efforts on Packager for iPhone

With the news that Apple has eased restrictions on third-party development tools, a very excited-sounding Adobe has announced it will resume working on its Flash-to-iPhone compiler, Packager for iPhone.

Soon after the news leaked in April that Apple was restricting third-party tools, a very publicly angry Adobe announced that its fledgling Packager app, part of Flash Professional CS5, wouldn’t be receiving future support after Apple’s restrictions effectively rendered the program useless.

Times have certainly changed now. “We’re hearing from our developer community that Packager apps are already being approved for the App Store,” Adobe says. Support for Adobe’s Flash Player plug-in, however, is still excluded from iOS.

Adobe has every reason to be excited about this, as do Flash developers, who will now have a relatively easy way to recompile their Flash apps for sale on the App Store. Whether that will also translate into high-quality apps is something we users will learn for ourselves as they show up on the App Store over the coming days and weeks.

Well, after hearing the news about apple changing their mind about what people can use to develop their iOS apps, I knew that soon enough, Adobe would continue work with their iPhone packager. So that means in theory that many of these companies that make some of these awesome flash games that are playable in your web browser could soon be coming to all iOS devices. Miniclip are an example of this. Some of their well known flash games have made their way onto the iPhone.

However, now that this has happened it will also mean that developers can now use a PC to develop their apps as well as a mac. Even though Adobe have resumed work on their iPhone packager, Apple are still doing all they can to kill off flash as a web technology.

Exchange Passcode on iPhone 4 – iOS 4.1 iPhone update allows disabling it

After you initially connect your iPhone running IOS4 to Exchange you get FORCED to provide a Passcode.

There was settings that allowed you to say the duration of time of inactivity that needs to pass before your phone got locked again by the passcode, but for many this was nearly an irritation

The ios4.1 update for iPhone fixed that by Allowing a “never” in the Auto-lock setting

There are reports that not all users experienced this to be true, but I’ll provide a screenshot once I also update…

Apple to increase frequency of pay for iOS developers

Are you an iOS developer who’s been pained by the threshold at which Apple decides to send payment out for your hard-earned app sales? Well, Apple has a bit of good news for you on that front.
Along with a new reporting module within iTunes Connect, Apple has decreased the amount developers must accumulate from sales before payment is issued, along with an increase in the frequency at which those payments are made. Not only will this decrease the amount spent on bank fees for developers, but the reports will give them a better understanding of how sales are doing.

Right now there’s no word on what the pay threshold and frequency have been changed to, but the quicker earnings make their way to developers’ pockets, the better. Are you a developer, and have you been hoping for such a change?

The same developers behind the popular iPhone Explorer have launched another useful tool called Phone Disk for Mac, which can automatically detect iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch (when connected) and mounts it in Finder as a USB Disk Drive. It can mount multiple devices as local drives so that the content becomes much easier to access.

Full operations, such as, preview, open, edit, and save can be performed just like it is a USB Device connected. You can even access the files using 3rd party applications, such as, document editing, graphics editing, and more such programs.

It integrates fully in Mac OS X, once launched, you will be able to access the program from the system tray.

The Guys at Prompt-it.com.au in Australia have come up with a novel use for the iPhone: using it as a teleprompting device.

If you need to do a video recording it is very distracting when people look donw on their notes and thereby reducing the quality of the video.

Folders on iPhone OS 3.1.2

Hello everyone,

This is Adiman423 with another great little find for your iPhone.

If you want to try out folders on your iPhone but you don’t want to upgrade your iDevice to iOS4, then I have found the app to do just that. I give you categories, it’s an app that allows you to organise your apps into folders without having to upgrade to OS4. I have described below how it works. Please note that your iPhone or iPod touch needs to be running OS2 or higher and needs to be jailbroken.

Step one: Launch the categories app

Step two: select manage folders

Step three: tap edit and then tap add

Step four: pick a name for your folder

Step five: tap done

Step six: select the folder you created and tap add, then select done.

Step seven: tap on the button that says “categories Vx.yza” (where x.yza is the version number of categories)

Step eight: click the respring button.

Of course, you can create multiple folders, by repeating this process.

I have done this on my iPhone and I have a screenshot below of how it looks.

All-in-all, it is a great solution for those still on iOS 3.1.2 who wish to find a way to tidy up their home screens without having to upgrade to iOS 4.0.

Skyhook Wireless Access Point Wardriving helps recover your iPhone, iPad or Laptop

Lost your iPhone, iPad or Laptop?

I recently had my iPhone stolen and miraculously returned by the perpetrator after 2 months of fealing guilty. Since then I’ve subscribed to the Apple Mobile Me service which includes Find my iPhone but have started looking at some options for doing the same with your laptop or PC.

Today on the New York Times website I saw an interesting article which showed some options for recovering your laptop from thieves, although none of the recovery companies could really prove they were able to recover the percentages they claimed.

One of the interesting options called “Undercover” spoke about SkyHook, which is a term I heard at an Apple Leadership event a few years ago and have mostly forgotten about.

Available for Macs and iPhones, Undercover takes pictures of a laptop’s user every time the device is turned on. Once the machine is connected to the Internet, it uploads those photos, as well as screen shots of a user’s activity, every six minutes. The laptop’s location is also noted using Skyhook technology, and all the information is sent to the laptop’s rightful owner, who can pass the information on to the local police.

What is Skyhook

You see Skyhook is basically a database of all the Wifi accesspoints of private citizens around the USA / Canada and also in the United Kingdom, which has been collected by people driving around and picking up the wireless access point SSID.

If this sounds like a strange Spy movie or Conspiracy theory, you are right it does. Not sure why its not illegal for companies to do this as surely some form of privacy is lost through the process.

Wikipedia’s definition for Skyhook Wireless is as follows:

At the Macworld Conference & Expo in January 2008, Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced that both the iPhone and iPod Touch will use Skyhook’s WPS as the primary location engine for Google Maps and other applications.^[5] Skyhook WPS is also available on the Apple iPad, launched in March 2010.

Undercover

Although this method of driving around and using other people’s wireless access points are illegal for normal citizens it seems to be more than fine for companies to do the same and build the technology that allows us to know our location on iPhone’s / Blackberry’s and other smart phone’s without actually having a GPS signal.

It is called Assisted GPS, but still feels a bit creepy.
