iPhone App Search portal MobileWalla launched

Today a brand new web-based portal for navigating through the vast universe of mobile apps launched called mobilewalla.com.

It is a deep mobile app search and discovery engine designed to assist consumers in finding their required app, through the highly fragmented and rapidly growing mobile app marketplace, which is already slated to reach 1 million apps by the end of 2011.

Anindya Datta, Ph.D., and founder of Mobilewalla, explains,

“Currently searching the app world is extremely daunting, and discovering useful apps a near impossibility. Mobilewalla provides the consumer a 360 degree view of all apps and their categories making navigating the mobile app universe a better experience for consumers.”

Mobilewalla seeks to incorporates groundbreaking new technology innovations to offer the first-ever uniform, unbiased rating system for the mobile app universe. The system currently allows a variety of searches across all apps available on Apple, Android, Blackberry and Windows 7 App stores. It scores and rates all these apps as well as every developer in these markets.

According to MobileWala this is a technological breakthroughs

Mobilewalla offers its users a number of interesting and useful ways to slice and dice the universe of apps, such as viewing apps in order of relevance, age, or “hotness” in, and across, all categories.

My Experience with Mobilewalla

Although the child-like interface was a surprise, I was soon delighted to see the animations weren’t done in Adobe Flash so should work across devices and operating systems.

I like the fact that there is a similarity aspect where you can find other similar apps which can be very useful for any smart phone user who wan’t to quickly compare some options for his / her particular requirement.

iOS 4.3 beta 1 released to developers

About a week ago, iOS 4.3 beta 1 was released to developers on Apple’s iOS developer program along with the 4.3 SDK and XCode. So what is new iOS 4.3 beta 1 you might ask?

Let me start off with something that many an iPad owner has been complaining about since the launch of iOS 4.2.1. When 4.2.1 was released, it has turned the screen rotation lock switch on the side of the iPad to a mute switch. With 4.3, you can now choose to keep it as a mute switch.

There has also been an addition which allows the user to do 4 or 5-finger gestures. To explain this better, I have left a video below to show how this works.

The third addition, is that you will be able to use your iPhone as a Wi-Fi hotspot. However, you can only have a maximum of 5 devices connected at a time. At the moment, Verizon Wireless in the USA will be one of the first of the networks to support this feature, but be patient and I can assure you that your network will support this feature.

All-in-all, this seems like another release from apple for the iPad. However, we have learnt a good lesson here. Complain in bulk and Apple will respond.

Now I am not going to spoil all the fun for you. If you are a developer, go ahead and download your copy of iOS 4.3 beta 1 and have a look at it for yourself, and feel free to let us know what you think of it.

On a side note, I can confirm that a Jailbreak for iOS 4.3 is also in the works. However, if you are on iOS 4.0.1 and you rely on Ultrasn0w for your unlock, do not upgrade to 4.2.1 or 4.3 beta1. If you are on 4.1 and you are jailbroken, do not upgrade to 4.2.1 or 4.3 beta 1. You will lose your jailbreak and will have to reinstall all your Cydia apps again. However, if you have paid for apps in the Cydia store, then you will not have to pay to download them again.

Run Android 2.3 on the iPhone 3G, iPhone 4 version coming soon

Nick Pack, an
iDroid developer, has just posted a video of an iPhone
3G running Android 2.3 Gingerbread (video embedded after the
break). It’s pretty sluggish, and the video quality is poor, but the
proof of concept is clear: it’s certainly Android 2.3 on an iPhone.

The same developer went
on to add that it’s still very early days for the port, and
that the “iPhone 4 port is under way and progressing steadily.” Of
course, once it runs on the iPhone 4, the Android 2.3 on the iPad is
just the tiniest of baby steps away.

While a public release of Android 2.3
for iPhone is probably a few weeks away, a stable build of Android
2.2 for iPhone is available from the iDroid site;
installation is pretty easy, and it runs quite well too.

so there you have it. A great way to get the best of both
worlds on an iPhone 3G. I have also left a video clip of this
above for you to have a look at. Though there may have been
performance issues with iOS 4 on the iPhone 3G, I am sure that when a
stable release of Android is ready, it should be usable. As
mentioned above, all of you iPhone 4 owners out there should also be
able to get in on the action soon as there will be a version of Android
for iPhone is in the works at the moment.

However, I should warn you that you will need to jailbreak
your iPhone if you want to try this out for yourselves.

Gameloft advent calendar: A free game every day until the 25th December

So, fancy a few treats for your iOS device? You might be in luck. It turns out that the kind people at Gameloft have already gotten into the holiday season spirit. Every day until Christmas this year, it turns out that Gameloft are doing a special advent-calendar event, whereby since December 1st 2010, you can have a free game from them every day. However, be aware that each game is only free for 24 hours. Therefore you would have to be quick. So far, they have only made Driver (the classic gangster driving game) a free game.

To find out which games are going to be free each day, be sure to check out Gameloft’s twitter page here . You never know which game they will make free. However, unless they state any global restrictions, then it is available to every country.

iOS 4.2 for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad is now ready for download

As promised by Apple, iOS 4.2 is now available. Head on over to iTunes and download the latest and greatest iOS firmware to date. iOS 4.2 brings a huge number of improvements to the iPhone and iPod family and finally brings the iPad into the 4.x fold. It’s a terrific update, and one, we think, that’s been worth the wait.

In addition to this, all iPhone 4, 4th generation iPod Touch users and iPad users will be able to take advantage of the free find my iPhone feature which would allow you to find your iPhone if you unfortunate enough to forget it somewhere or have it stolen.

All you jailbreakers and unlockers will have to wait until the dev teams come out with their jailbreaks and software unlock for 4.2.

Apart from that, be sure to connect your iOS device to iTunes on your computer and update. Then be sure to let us know what you think of it.
