According to the Wall Street Journal, it seems that apple are already looking into problems with iOS4 on the iPhone 3G. This has come after multiple posts on Apple’s support forums. After upgrading to iOS 4 on the iPhone 3G, the most common complaint raised by iPhone 3G users is that the iPhone 3G has become slow. In addition to this some have also reported that the battery is drained very quickly, the phone gets "excessively hot" and that the phone is rendered almost unusable.
Now for those of you who have upgraded already to iOS4 on your iPhone 3G, if you are feeling brave enough, then you can try and downgrade. however, we cannot be held responsible for any problems you may have with your iPhone 3G doing this downgrade. You can find the tutorial on how to do the downgrade by clicking here. I should say that if you are doing this on a windows PC, then you may need to download Microsoft’s .NET framework version 4.0. In addition to this as shown in the tutorial you will also need either the 3.1.2 IPSW or 3.1.3 IPSW . You can get these by clicking on one of the links below.
For those of you who are still on 3.1.2 or 3.1.3 on your iPhone 3G, I strongly recommend not upgrading to iOS4 until further notice.

I’ve noticed the speed (or lack thereof) problem as well as the battery draining problem. The 4.1 upgrade did not seem to cure it. Now that I have an iPhone 4, and I plan to send my 3G (with OS 4.1) on it to a friend….should I try to go back to OS 3, jailbreak the phone or leave it as it is for her?

You can try and downgrade to 3.1.3 if you want, but iPhone tutorial videos cannot be held responsible for any problems you may have performing the downgrade.
