After hearing the great news that iPhone Wifi Hotspot functionality is coming to the iOS4.3, you might be disappointed that it seems that the Mobile phone Carriers (at least in the UK and US it seems) wants to charge the same Tethering Fee in addition to your Data fee that you are already on
Many iPhone Users believe this is unfair and just not necessarily considering the loyalty of iPhone Users and that nearly no-one I’ve met has used up all their 3G data in a month.
How much will the wifi hotspot on your iPhone cost
If you click on the “Set Up Personal Hotspot” feature in iOS4.3 you are sent to:http://www.o2.co.uk/assets/O2HybridNav/ … ltons.html
Where it states clearly that:
“nternet tethering lets you connect your iPhone to your computer and use it as a modem so you can get on the internet, a bit like mobile broadband. To use this you’ll need to be on an iPhone tariff and purchase an Internet Tethering Bolt On.
Bolt Ons for Pay Monthly* 500MB – £7.50 a month (minimum 30 days)
Bolt Ons for Business & Corporate *
* Now £6.38 for 500MB as an additional allowance to your handheld bundle.
Jailbreak alternatives
If that is indeed the case it would make sense to jailbreak one of the iPhone (again) in your family or group of friends to get Hotspot functionality for only $20 once off.
Enabling the Wi-Fi Hotspot
Sure, if you’re running iOS 4.3 you can pay $US20 per month for a Wi-Fi hotspot on your phone, but if you jailbreak you can pay $US20 just once to get the same functionality. My-Wi is a $US20 application that you can purchase in the Cydia store and makes nearly every tethering option you can imagine a possibility on your device. All you have to do is search for it in the Cydia store, purchase it, and install it. From there you just launch the app, click the Wi-Fi symbol, and turn your hotspot on.

Instead of Mywi, you can use PDAnet which is free.
Thanks for the Reminder Jay. That is true. PDAnet is indeed a free alternative to myWI but both require your iPhone to be jailbroken.
