For customers in the UK who got their iPHones on o2 when the iphone launced in the UK is now able to officially unlock their iPhone’s so that it can work on any network, and more impressively you can get it done online through o2.

What is more is that it is Free for Pay monthly customers on o2.

This came into effect on the 10th of November 2009 after the iPhone became available on Orange, one of the UK’s biggest 3G Networks.

This means more choice and freedom for all iPhone users in the UK and I’m glad to see this happening.

The process differs a little bit for Pay monthly customers and Pay as you go customers but basically:

1. Visit the o2 site and complete the unlocking form located at: https://www.o2.co.uk/apps/help/help?qid=1&q1=2&route=unlocking&case=Handset%20Unlocking%20Form
2. Wait 14 days
3. Receive a text from o2 to confirm the unlock request.
4. Place a non-O2 sim into the iPhone and connect your iPhone to iTunes via a USB cable.
5. iTunes will confirm that the iPhone has been successfully unlocked.
