iOS 4.2 for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad is now ready for download

As promised by Apple, iOS 4.2 is now available. Head on over to iTunes and download the latest and greatest iOS firmware to date. iOS 4.2 brings a huge number of improvements to the iPhone and iPod family and finally brings the iPad into the 4.x fold. It’s a terrific update, and one, we think, that’s been worth the wait.

In addition to this, all iPhone 4, 4th generation iPod Touch users and iPad users will be able to take advantage of the free find my iPhone feature which would allow you to find your iPhone if you unfortunate enough to forget it somewhere or have it stolen.
All you jailbreakers and unlockers will have to wait until the dev teams come out with their jailbreaks and software unlock for 4.2.
Apart from that, be sure to connect your iOS device to iTunes on your computer and update.  Then be sure to let us know what you think of it.

iOS 4.1 jailbreak is on the way

GameStop, Inc.If you are like me, then you like to keep your iOS device jailbroken.  Apple’s latest generation Apple TV has been discovered to be running iOS 4.1.  It does not however, run springboard.  Springboard is the application that runs the home screen on your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.  The Apple TV runs an application called LowTide.

The iPhone dev team has already used an exploit called SHAtter to jailbreak the 4th generation iPod Touch and the Apple TV.   You can check out the lowdown on SHAtter from the link below.

SHAttered iPod Touch 4G

If they have managed to this much and get this far with the iPod Touch 4G, then I am sure that we should see a jailbreak for iOS 4.1 for all iOS devices soon.  As soon as the iPhone Dev Team release their tools, then I will post the information here.  At the moment, redsn0w is the only tool available for iOS 4.1 jailbreaking.  It only works with a Mac running an x86 OSX.  This beta version of redsn0w only supports the iPhone 3G and any non-MC model of the 2nd generation iPod Touch.

iPhone Dev Team releases jailbreak for iOS4.1

If you are like me, you have been waiting for a jailbreak for your iPhone 3G or iPod Touch 2nd generation.

We’ve released a beta version of redsn0w for the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G at FW 4.1 or 4.0.  It uses the same pwnage2 DFU-mode exploit that we’ve been using since the 2.x days.  It does not include the SHAtter exploit developed by pod2g.  Nothing new is revealed to Apple with this jailbreak.

IF YOU USE THE ULTRASN0W UNLOCK, PLEASE WAIT FOR PWNAGETOOL TO SUPPORT 4.1.  DO NOT USE REDSN0W. That’s because to use redsn0w at 4.1, you need to already have updated to official 4.1 from Apple.  If you do that, you lose the ultrasn0w unlock (possibly forever).

The Windows version needs further testing, so for now this is available only for Mac OS X x86.  The Windows version will come as soon as the bugs are ironed out.

Note: if you have an “MC” model of the ipt2g, your 4.1 jailbreak will be tethered…sorry!  (Consider rolling back to a FW supported by jailbreakme.com or spiritjb.com)

===== What devices, platforms, and FW versions are supported? =====

This BETA release supports:

  • iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G only (for now)
  • Mac OS X x86 only (for now)
  • 4.1 or 4.0 firmware from Apple

===== How do I use it? =====

If you’ve already updated your device to 4.1 or 4.0, the next steps are:

  1. Launch the beta redsn0w 0.9.6b1
  2. Select your stock 4.1 or 4.0 ipsw (you’ve already used this to update your device to 4.1 or  4.0)
  3. Select “Install Cydia” and any of the other options shown above, then click “Next”.  Use DFU mode to install the jailbreak.

Note: If you choose to “Enable battery percentage”, you actually toggle that off and on via Settings->General->Usage.

Update on 25/09/2010: I can confirm that if you have a hackintosh running OSX leopard or OSX sn0w leopard, then this new redsn0w beta will do an untethered jailbreak the iPhone 3G. You can try this if you want, but iPhone Tutorial Videos cannot be held responsible for any problems you may have carrying out this jailbreak. Additionally, when given the choice of what features you want to install, you must leave “enable multitasking”, “enable home screen wallpaper” and “enable battery percentage” unticked.  You may however keep the “install cydia” option ticked.

iTunes 10 is safe for jailbreakers

My3G allows FaceTime Calls over 3G

Hot on the heels of this weekend’s release of the JailbreakMe Web-based jailbreak tool for iOS devices, users with jailbroken iPhone 4s can now think about installing My3G from Intelliborn, which was just updated to enable FaceTime video calling over 3G connections.

My3G essentially tricks a user’s phone into thinking it is on Wi-Fi instead of 3G, allowing users to access a number of features and types of content typically restricted to Wi-Fi connections. My3G is typically available to jailbroken iPhones via Rock Your iPhone for $3.99, but the site is currently down due to the high traffic load.

9 to 5 Mac has posted a video briefly showing off FaceTime over 3G in action.

I should warn you that this may take a lot of bandwidth. If you are on a data plan with a strict limit, then I suggest limiting your facetime calls to 30 seconds maximum or not use this. Fantastic news today from the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF).  After a lot of hard work and mountains of paperwork, jailbreaking your iPhone is now explicitly a permitted fair use under the DMCA!

The first of EFF’s three successful requests clarifies the legality of cell phone “jailbreaking” — software modifications that liberate iPhones and other handsets to run applications from sources other than those approved by the phone maker. More than a million iPhone owners are said to have “jailbroken” their handsets in order to change wireless providers or use applications obtained from sources other than Apple’s own iTunes “App Store,” and many more have expressed a desire to do so. But the threat of DMCA liability had previously endangered these customers and alternate applications stores.

In its reasoning in favor of EFF’s jailbreaking exemption, the Copyright Office rejected Apple’s claim that copyright law prevents people from installing unapproved programs on iPhones: “When one jailbreaks a smartphone in order to make the operating system on that phone interoperable with an independently created application that has not been approved by the maker of the smartphone or the maker of its operating system, the modifications that are made purely for the purpose of such interoperability are fair uses.”

The EFF also successfully renewed the existing DMCA exception for carrier unlocking.  More on the ruling by the Library of Congress is here and here (and many other places, since this is huge news!). The full ruling is here, and EFF’s history with this case is here (EFF’s servers are understandably getting hammered today!).

This doesn’t mean that Apple will stop their technical attempts to thwart jailbreaking, it just means that it’s now unambiguously legal under the DMCA for you the end user to both jailbreak and unlock.

Connect iPhone and iPad as Local USB Drive in Windows or Mac Finder

Previously I reviewed iPhone Explorer as well as another few alternatives to transfering data to and from your iPhone or iPod without using iTunes which were somewhat successful.

The same developers behind the popular iPhone Explorer have launched another useful tool called Phone Disk for Mac, which can automatically detect iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch (when connected) and mounts it in Finder as a USB Disk Drive. It can mount multiple devices as local drives so that the content becomes much easier to access.

Full operations, such as, preview, open, edit, and save can be performed just like it is a USB Device connected. You can even access the files using 3rd party applications, such as, document editing, graphics editing, and more such programs.

It integrates fully in Mac OS X, once launched, you will be able to access the program from the system tray.

The main aim of the developers, however, is to make browsing iPhone in Finder easier. It supports all versions of iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.iTunes 8, 9, or later.

A neat feature that the developers added is that images copied to the DCIM folder on the devices can be previewed directly in the Photos app. This allows you to access all the photos you’ve taken on your iPhone directly.

iPhone 4 has been unlocked by the iPhone dev team

Breaking iPhone 4 news.  
@Planetbeing of the iPhone Dev Team has managed to soft-unlock the iPhone 4.  
 
For those of you who don’t know it, the last iPhone dev team soft-unlock was ultrasn0w, which could only be obtained on jailbroken iPhones
running iOS 3.x.
 
For those of you who have a Jailbroken iPhone running iOS 3.1.3 or iOS 3.1.2, I suggest waiting until the Spirit jailbreak for 
iOS 4 has been released.  
 
Unfortunately, I don’t have any indication yet of when Spirit or Ultrasn0w will be released for iOS 4.  However, as 
soon as I do then I will post here so be sure to check back here on a regular basis.

The Guys at Prompt-it.com.au in Australia have come up with a novel use for the iPhone: using it as a teleprompting device.

If you need to do a video recording it is very distracting when people look donw on their notes and thereby reducing the quality of the video.

With their device your Skype chats, or Youtube video recordings can now seem just as professional as the BBC news.

I think its a nice idea and the price isn’t too bad either since it uses professional BeamSplitter Glass, however an iPad version might be easier to read

Folders on iPhone OS 3.1.2

Hello everyone, 
This is Adiman423 with another great little find for your iPhone.

If you want to try out folders on your iPhone but you don’t want to upgrade your iDevice to iOS4, then I have found the app to do just that.  I give you categories, it’s an app that allows you to organise your apps into folders without having to upgrade to OS4. I have described below how it works.  Please note that your iPhone or iPod touch needs to be running OS2 or higher and needs to be jailbroken.  

Step one: Launch the categories app
Step two: select manage folders
Step three: tap edit and then tap add
Step four: pick a name for your folder
Step five: tap done
Step six: select the folder you created and tap add, then select done.  
Step seven: tap on the button that says “categories Vx.yza” (where x.yza is the version number of categories)
Step eight: click the respring button.  
Of course, you can create multiple folders, by repeating this process.  
I have done this on my iPhone and I have a screenshot below of how it looks.

All-in-all, it is a great solution for those still on iOS 3.1.2 who wish to find a way to tidy up their home screens without having to upgrade to iOS 4.0.

With the new Mame4iPhone emulator for iPod Touch and iPhone you can play over 2,000 games which were released after 1970. The new emulator for iPod Touch is based on MAME v3.07 Beta 5. It is also not fully known that every ROM will work with the emulator but the emulator looks cool. The emulator was developed by homebrew iPod Touch developer ZodTTD.

If you have a Jailbroken iPhone you will be happy to know you can now play your favourite Arcade games on the iPhone.

There is a bit of a legal issue there though, since not all of the games are “public domain” yet.

This must definitely be the quickest and easiest iPhone or Mobile phone stand I’ve seen. Previous ideas involved miniDV tape holders, Cardboard Cutouts and more but this simple 1 minute job really does the best job.

How to upgrade your iPhone to iPad for free with some DIY

Not All people appreciate the iPad, mostly because they haven’t played with it. Similar to most Apple products… when you go Mac you will never go back.

This unfortunately is only experienced once you get your hands on Apple gadgets.

So, If you either don’t want an iPad, or just can’t wait to get your hands on the new iPad and have to imitate the experience you can always go the DIY route…

Please note this is not for everyone. If you are happy with your iPhone, and would find it a massive hassle to retrieve your contact no, bookmarks or video and music you have on your iPhone best to stay away from this for now as you can seriously damage your iPone.

That being said, for everyone else who might have jailbroken their iPhones.

First step is to open cydia and add the following source: apt.dmytro.me

Next search for the App called USB drive


INSTALLATION AND USE

  1. Install USB Drive from my Cydia repository.
  2. Launch USB Drive.
  3. Create some disk. It takes a while to allocate large amount of data
  4. Switch to the Mass Storage mode. 
  5. Reboot
  6. Connect USB Cable
  7. Enjoy!
  8. Email me you results, what do you like or what do you dislike You will now have the opportunity to basically re-format parts of the iphone hard-drive so that it can be picked up as a USB hard-drive on a PC or Mac

    USB Drive for the iPhone platform (CE2I to name it short) let you use iPhone or iPod Touch as USB Mass Storage device.

    This is a beta release, please expect bugs. Read the following text carefully, it contains important information. Seriously.

    USB Mass Storage protocol is widely supported by modern operation systems and consumer devices, USB thumb drives and photo cameras are good examples of devices which implement USB Mass Storage protocol. Since this device class is likely supported by your operation system you do not need any additional drivers or complex (read: any) setup, this makes information exchange much easier.

    USB Drive let you create one or more virtual disks for use as USB Mass Storage volume, thus you can allocate some of your iPhone space to carry desktop files with you
