The “How to” for your iPhone

Video Recording on iPhone 2G / 3G now available without JailBreak

Do you need Video on your iphone 2G/3G but can’t yet upgrade to a 3GS iphone?

Luckily since late Dec 2009 a couple of Video Recording Apps started appearing in the iTunes App Store to allow iPhone 2G or iPhone 3G users to officially also record Video and join their friends who have iPhone 3GS’.

Unfortunately due to the type of camera in the iPhone 2G and 3G  the video produced will never be as good as the 3GS.

However, if you just want some quick and easy videos to upload to youtube or the like, then purchasing one of the £0.59 apps will feel like a massive upgrade to your iPhone without having to Jailbreak.

There are quite a few available without you having to jailbreak your older iPhone, but beware, some are really not up to scratch yet.

To make it easier to decide I’ve reviewed a few for you.

iVideoCamera

Benefits:

I think this is probably the best video application available for your pre-3GS iPhone due to all the sharing options, landscape mode and its quick update cycles.

The developers seem to be adding features and improving the Frame rate with every release.

Its not quite up to the 15 frames per second that Cycorder provides you if you decide jailbreak your iPhone, but the ease of usage and easy sharing beats the Cycorder’s funtionalty.

More Benefits:

Additionally it also supports landscape mode recording.

Wifi Sharing from your web browser.

One Possible alternative:

iCamCorder for iPhone 2G/3G

Price: £0.59

Benefits:

Includes Camera Zoom – 1x,2x and 4x

Share your videos via email, facebook or email

Settings to disable the audio to increase framerate

Negative: Problems with recording and framerate but these might be improved in the future

Other not so useful alternatives:

Video Camera (for iPhone 2G and 3G) -

iPhone3G Video Camera

Price: $0.59

Negative point: Video’s are only Limited to 10 seconds

– Video Recorder for iPhone 2G

No current reviews for the new version is available.

Price: £0.59

It seems the main new benefits they have included is sharing with facebook and Twitvid which is quite useful.

ShowTime Screenshot:

Benefits:

According to the developers it has twice the frame rate and a higher resolution than other competing apps at the time in the Appstore (13 Jan 2010)

CONCLUSION:

Althougn none of these apps allow you to get the same quality as a iPhone 3GS, the current standing is that iVideo Camera is the  way to upgrade your iPhone 2G or 3G without spending much (£0.59)
