Hello to one and all,
Adiman423 here with a review of Opera Mini for the iPhone.
20 days after It’s developers submitted it, It was approved to the shock of many. However, it’s here now and I have it on my iPhone. So let’s get straight into what’s what with Opera Mini.
Straight away, I have noticed the excellent speed dial feature that you get on the desktop PC version of Opera.
Easily customisable
In addition to this, it is very easy to set up to your needs.
- You can go into settings and customise how pages load.
- Whether you want to have a page with a smaller font size, or loading no images, it’s up to you.
Clear increase in speed
The one feature that I found really good is how quickly pages load up in Opera mini. Compared to mobile Safari, it turns out that it is significantly quicker due to compression done on Opera’s servers.
However, there were a few problems that I ran into with Opera Mini.
- It has no support for pinch-to-zoom gestures.
- Additionally, it also does not present pages how they would normally be seen on an iphone and links to the itunes app store and the music store don’t get redirected to the app store app or the itunes store.
- The other problem I had when using the application is that pages only load up as they would on a normal computer. However, I presume that could be fixed with an update.
Compatibility with iPhones / iPad’s iPods
Opera mini for the iPhone will run on all devices that are compatible with iPhone OS3.1 or better. If you have an iPad then it will also work on there as well.
Conclusion
All-in-all it is an okay alternative to safari. However, given time, it could possibly become a good alternative to Safari. I only use it to load up pages like BBC news where I need information in my hands quickly as shown in the screenshot below. Overall, it gets 7/10 from me.
