Apple today announced on its iphone 4 Case Program page (via The Loop) that it will be discontinuing the program as of the previously-stated September 30th end date. The company is also ending its no-restocking-fee, 30-day return policy for the iphone 4, returning to its standard return policy that requires a 10% restocking fee on opened merchandise and returns within 14 days of purchase.

Apple is, however, leaving open the possibility of providing cases to customers who demonstrate a distinct problem with antenna issues on their devices. At the company’s July press conference to address the issue, Steve Jobs had stated that Apple would re-evaluate the program as the September 30th deadline approached.

We now know that the iPhone 4 antenna attenuation issue is even smaller than we originally thought. A small percentage of iPhone 4 users need a case, and we want to continue providing them a Bumper case for free. For everyone else, we are discontinuing the free case program on all iPhone 4s sold after September 30, 2010. We are also returning to our normal returns policy for all iPhone 4s sold after September 30. Users experiencing antenna issues should call AppleCare to request a free Bumper case.

An executive with Mexican iPhone carrier Telcel late last month claimed that Apple would be introducing revised iPhone 4 hardware by the end of September to address the antenna issue, but Apple has made no announcements regarding changes to its hardware or manufacturing process.

Now I have said this once, and I will say it again. Apple really do know how to keep their customers happy.

Performance is a top priority for any device and Apple has proven it beats many when it comes to the smartphone arena with its iphone. I hate to say it being an Android fan but that’s the truth in many cases. Both the hardware and the software play an equally important role when it comes to the overall performance of the device. Apple released the iOS 4.1 with promises from Steve Jobs that the latest version would resolve many issues, primarily for the iphone 3G users running on the iOS4.

Putting the software part to test, Lifehacker [thanks] shared a video on performance of the the iPhone 3G on the iOS 4 and the iOS 4.1 comparison. The video doesn’t really show a massive difference in performance but it some cases the difference is significant, especially when loading the maps. On others, like Photos, browsing on Safari, the speed difference is marginal and not really that great to make you drool over update. The winning feature with the iOS 4.1 is definitely going to be the fixes for other issues that many iPhone 3G users have complained about.

So there you have it. It goes to prove that if many people get together to fix a problem, it can be done. I know for certain that once iOS 4.1 gets jailbroken, then I will definitely be upgrading to it on my iOS device. Of course that video which I have left for you all to see above clearly shows that iOS 4.1 really does fix the performance issues on the iPhone 3G. However, I can confirm that there will be no multitasking on the iPhone 3G with 4.1.

When iOS 4.1 is released by Apple next week, it will have a number of new bells and whistles enhancing the iphone and iPod Touch experience. Whether or not the highly-anticipated update will finally fix the proximity sensor issue plaguing iphone 4 users, though, is still uncertain.

When Steve Jobs presented iOS 4.1 he focused on the new features being introduced. Applying the iOS update will add the new iTunes Ping feature, the ability to rent TV shows via iTunes, HD video uploads via W-Fi, HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography, and the Xbox Live-like Game Center for social gaming. Jobs also mentioned in passing that iOS 4.1 will fix nagging issues with Bluetooth, 3G performance, and the notorious proximity sensor issue.

Cries of “hallelujah” (or maybe “finally”, or “it’s about time”) arose from iPhone 4 users haunted by putting calls on speakerphone, or hanging up on customers or co-workers with their cheek thanks to the flaky proximity sensor failing to disable the touchscreen display while engaged in a call. Some developers, however, suggest it may be premature to celebrate just yet.

One developer who has had an opportunity to work with and test the beta releases and the Gold Master (GM)–the official release–of iOS 4.1 has identified that the proximity sensor still has issues. Ryan Thomas Bell has even taken the time to compile and post YouTube videos demonstrating the continuing problem with the proximity sensor.

Bell, who goes by the alias “mistabell” on the Apple Forums, posted “I hate to be the naysayer (i love you apple!) but I don’t think the GM that went out today with the announcement fixes the problem all the way. At least not for everyone under every condition. (I played with it for about an hour today.) My last posts got deleted because I mentioned a pre-release, so I won’t post the technical reasoning. I’m going to move my discussion over to the private developer forums. Good luck, guys.”

Another post on the Apple Forums from dbk9999 says “it isn’t just about the sensor activating at a certain distance, but it changes according to how you use it. It has to be software making these “decisions”. So it could be possible that software could fix it. It could be that a hardware problem is too much for the software to compensate for.”

This may be a case like the iPhone 4 antenna “death grip” issue that is possible to mitigate or minimize, but not entirely fix via software. Perhaps the rumors that Apple is developing a re-engineered iPhone 4 with a hardware fix for the antenna problem will also include a hardware engineering solution to fully resolve the proximity sensor issue.

Of course, for all of you with Jailbroken iOS devices, you know the drill. Don’t upgrade to 4.1 until the iPhone Dev Team releases their tools that will jailbreak iOS 4.1. Market research firm Morpace polled iphone users (on AT&T) to see how many of them would consider switching to a Verizon iphone if given the opportunity, and how many were waiting for such a change to take place. Of those surveyed 34 percent would make the switch from AT&T to Verizon if the phone became available, while 47 percent said they would give it some thought.

Of 1,000 users surveyed, it was also found that 29 percent of consumers across all carriers said they would likely buy an iPhone from Verizon. 51 percent were already Verizon customers, meaning that quite a few Verizon customers are in fact waiting for the iPhone to land on their network.

As TechCrunch points out, this would definitely hurt Android sales, because the Android OS is currently the top choice for smartphone users on Verizon.

If the iPhone were to become available across more carriers, there is no telling how it would impact Android sales.

For those who don’t know, AT&T and Verizon are both mobile phone networks in the USA. So it seems that AT&T customers want to have an iPhone on the Verizon network. Apple however need to know that they cannot keep ignoring the requests of their customers. However, from what I know the iPhone may actually launch on verizon as soon as January 2011.

This is because a source of mine very close to Apple has told me that apple has ordered millions of CDMA chipsets from the company qualcomm. CDMA for those who don’t know it is the technology that Verizon uses on their network.

I should also say at this point, for those of you waiting for iOS4 on the iPad, Apple is going to be releasing it somewhere around Autumn of 2010(or this fall). I also know that the iPad will also have full iOS4 support. This means that all the 100+ features of iOS4 will work on the iPad with no problems.

During Apple’s press conference today, Steve Jobs just announced that the company will issue a free case to every iphone 4 purchased through September 30 . If you’ve already purchased a bumper case for your iphone 4, you are entitled to a refund.

You can apply for the free case through Apple’s web site starting late next week. The company plans to source cases from third parties due to a shortage in bumper cases, so iPhone 4 customers will have a choice of a few different cases. If you are still not satisfied with the iPhone, you can return it for a full refund within 30 days of your purchase. Steve Jobs said plainly about the decision that “we want to make everyone happy, and if we can’t make you happy we’ll give you a full refund.”

The move comes three weeks and a day after the first customers began taking their new iPhones home and experiencing both antenna and proximity sensor issues. The growing backlash against Apple escalated earlier this week after Consumer Reports said they would not recommend the device, even though it comes in at the top of their smartphone ratings. This was followed by rumors of a possible recall, posts being pulled down from the Apple forums and finally today’s conference.

Edit (2:25 p.m. ET): Jobs acknowledged that the case offer will be international.

I should point out that when the iPhone 4 came out two months back, apple were selling their bumper cases as a way to pay for the free iOS4 updates for iPod touch owners. However, if they are going to continue this free bumper case offer for a long time, then iPod touch owners may have to pay to upgrade their iOS. In addition to this, Apple have announced during the press conference today, that they will be releasing the iPhone 4 in 17 more countries including New Zealand, Australia and Singapore, and the White iPhone 4 will be released at the end of July. If you have an older iPhone3G but don’t quite have the means to get the iphone 4 at the moment I would suggest the following:

1) Recycling your iPhone 3G and
2) Purchase a 3GS since the iOs seems to work great on 3GS
